Start by doing what's necessary, then what's possible, and suddenly you are doing the impossible.
The title of this piece was originally "THIS HEART OF MINE AND MAN." It was written to encompass the heart of man and I believe it still does. But as I worked on the poem it became more personal. I was depicting the state of man as a place I use to be in when I was an unbeliever. I saw God revealing the state of my own heart's condition and its ongoing struggles. So it became "THIS HEART." The daily warfare of the soul and of the heart is a personal battle. As we walk with Christ, we all struggle with this.
As with "JOHN'S DREAM," I am still deeply passionate about this very personal piece of writing.

THIS HEART
Stone cold black coal

Murderous slanderous

Boastful envious

Impatient judgmental

Malicious jealous

Lying cheat
this heart
Ungrateful unkind
this heart
Treacherous reckless
this heart
Selfish pleasure seeking
this heart
Violent fierce
this heart
Intolerant stubborn

Full of filthy rags

Jesus
Is this not... the place... You found me?
Is this house... dirty... again?
Like a toad in a glass beaker
On a slow... burn... flame.
Cry... cry... cry
Mercy...
Cry... cry... cry
Mercy...
Father
Take this...
Stone cold black coal heart
Away from me
I don’t... want it... anymore
It’s getting... too dark... too dark
To see
Take this key... unlock the door
For this... gets... the best of me
This heart... it cries
For Thee.
